Social Return on Investment, Explained.

What is SROI

The term SROI (Social Return on Investment) has been used in various contexts to mean that nonprofits create social value. SROI measures change in ways that are relevant to the people or organisations that experience or contribute to it. It tells the story of how change is being created by measuring social, environmental and economic outcomes and uses monetary values to represent them.

However, there have been limited efforts to date to quantify and monetize this social value creation. Working with Social Firms of Australia (SoFA) and Social Ventures Australia (SVA), has embarked on a measuring process that identifies direct, demonstrable cost savings and revenue contributions associated with an individual’s employment in a social purpose enterprise.

The measurements include tracking social outcomes of ordinarily difficult to monetize measures of social value, such as increases in self-esteem and social support systems, or improvements in housing stability. Each social purpose enterprise within the VATMI group will participate in this evaluation process, the result being a report that can be used in improving overall business efficiency as well as a tool that will aid our business development / local government tender activities.

As a result of the in-depth data collection and analysis process we are about to embark upon, we will be able to say with certainty that our portfolio of business enterprises is having a lasting, positive impact on the lives of employees and the communities within our sphere of influence.

Kate Argentino has joined our team to oversee the project which will commence first at Sandhurst Enterprise Recycling in Bendigo and then at Wangaratta Recycling Centre.

  Chadstone Synners Road to Glory!

The Chadstone Synners Disability Team is an Australian Rules football club that enables people with a disability to take to the field. There are four divisions of the team, each catering to different levels of abilities. Players need to be over 13 to join the team and for those under 13; there is Auskick in conjunction with Mt Waverly Auskick. The club is run solely by volunteers and provides invaluable health, fitness and social interaction opportunities. VATMI are proud supporters of the Synners and have donated new kits for the players.
Not only are VATMI proud supporters of the Chadstone Synners but we are also proud representatives for the team. Our very own, David Rob, David Henry and Christopher Clarke are seasoned players for the Chadstone Synners! The Synners are looking to add a premiership to their mantelpiece this year, so get down and support the boys! The next game is on Sunday 27th March at 10.00am, Chadstone Versus Mazedon at Jordan Reserve, Burton Street, Chadstone.

  Earth Hour

Earth Hour is a phenomenon which originated in Sydney 2007. Earth Hour encourages people to switch off their lights for one hour as a stand against climate change. In 2007, 2.2 million individuals and more than 2000 businesses turned off their lights in a united front. Since then, Earth Hour has gone global, including symbolic switching off of such land marks as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Colosseum in Rome and CN Tower in Toronto to name but a few.
Earth Hour 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour ever. A record 128 participating countries and territories joined the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off their lights in solidarity for this extremely important cause. Please take the time to learn about this extraordinary exercise and help make Earth Hour even more successful in the future. On Saturday 26th March at 8.30pm the world switched off your lights and made a stand for our planet. Visit the website for more details: www.earthhour.org

  VATMI is Going GREEN

Now, like no other time in history we have to be more aware and responsible about our ecological footprint. VATMI is making a marked effort to further our environmental policy internally to do our bit to combat global warming. A greener workplace can mean a lighter ecological footprint and a healthier, more productive workplace. VATMI is committed to prevent pollution and effectively manage significant environmental impact.

For those of you amongst us who feel strongly in this area, please forward any energy saving or environmentally responsible ideas to Rachel Cullen rculen@vatmi.com.au and we will do our best to incorporate them into our policy. An internal ‘Green Policy’ will be distributed along with additional information to further cut our internal impacts in simple and easy steps everybody can take. We will also be introducing small changes around the office and our working lives to further reduce our impact and strengthen our environmental policy – so stay tuned!

Global warming, ecological footprints, rising emissions and environmental policies may seem a little daunting for the individual but if we all work together, taking simple, easy and practical steps we can make a significant impact in VATMI’s carbon footprint.

  VicWest – Team News

VicWest are proud to announce two new employees joining their team, Lindy Carr and Justin Williams (pictured). Justin has returned to VicWest after many years away and is thoroughly enjoying his return to the workforce. Lindy has recently relocated to Stawell from Ararat. Lindy was eager to seek employment in the Stawell area, however was uncertain about the prospect of finding a job without the need to travel.
Luckily, VicWest was able to offer both a fulfilling role, whilst offering a convenient location that required no travel. All at VicWest have welcomed both Lindy and Justin into the team and we are all looking forward to a long working relationship.

  PRONTO in Action

A small working party consisting of Ravi Jani, Ben Bruitzman, Louis Dunstan and Geoff Fisher recently got together to streamline the process of recording inwards and outwards goods and products within VaTPaK. It was identified that a spreadsheet system was being maintained as well as being entered into Pronto – a case of double recording.

The group was able to develop a Pronto report that provided all of the information that was being provided by the spreadsheet report. It also had the additional benefit of being able to drill back on the data and obtain further information not provided by the spreadsheet. The new report was given the green light by the site managers and has been in place for about a month now.

Louis said that the new process gives him back about an hour a day. "This is an hour I can now spend on maintaining the warehouse in an orderly manner rather than on paperwork." Geoff endorsed Louis’s comments and said that this was a perfect example of where the fully integrated Pronto system can increase productivity. "I'm sure there are other examples of double handling in our organisation and I would love to hear about and eradicate them."

  • What is the best thing about your job:
    • Best thing about my job is that I get to interact with pretty much everyone in the organization.
  • How long have you been with VATMI:
    • I have been with VATMI for 3.5 years now. It is the longest I have worked anywhere before, by far!
  • Where did you work before VATMI
    • My immediate job prior to joining VATMI was with United Petroleum as an assistant to management accountant and later worked equally with the operations manager in maintaining service station set-ups.

  • What was your first concert:
    • My first concert was in Mumbai, which was in the summer of '96'. My cousins took me out to an open concert at Juhu Beach. I can't even remember the name of the band as it was pretty ordinary! After coming to Melbourne, I happened to attend an Enrique Iglesias concert, in the Palace Theatre, St Kilda. The best thing about that concert was what it cost me – it was free!
  • What is the best piece of advice you have been given:
    • Do not be scared of any difficulties in life, take them as challenge and give your all.
