The National Waste Policy.
Vatmi Industries has significant business interests in the area of waste and the National Waste Policy heralds a new, coherent, efficient and environmentally responsible approach to waste management in Australia. The policy, agreed by all Australian environment ministers in November 2009, and endorsed by the Council of Australian Governments, sets Australia's waste management and resource recovery direction to 2020.

|
Under the National Waste Policy: Less waste, more resources, the Australian Government agreed to develop and enact national legislation to support voluntary, co-regulatory and mandatory product stewardship and extended producer responsibility schemes.
The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population & Communities is preparing draft regulations to underpin industry arrangements for collecting and recycling televisions and computers under the National Television and Computer Product Stewardship Scheme.
|
The product stewardship legislation will provide a consistent approach to reducing the environmental footprint and health and safety risks of specified manufactured products and materials, during and at the end of their useful life.
Under the proposed approach to recycling arrangements for televisions and computers, importers or manufacturers will join a product stewardship organisation (PSO) to organise for collection and recycling of televisions and computers.
As readers will be aware, VATMI Industries has been involved in the recycling industry for over 25 years and to position ourselves in the eWaste "space" we have partnered with 3 other ADE's to establish an alliance with the capability to demanufacture eWaste on a state-wide basis. Our partners are Oznam Enterprizes (Melbourne), Vantage Incorporated (Warrnambool) and Noweyung Ltd (Bairnsdale). To support the alliance, Surplus Recycling Solutions (and existing commercial eWaste recycler) have agreed to share their best practices with us and act as our commodity broker.
This approach is somewhat unique in the social enterprise sector and the organisations that elected to participate in the alliance model are applauded for their faith and investment in investigating this approach.
It is given that there will be considerable marketing and capacity advantages to operating as a group as well as significant cost saving in administration, training and operations but for these benefits to be fully realised it has been agreed by members to the alliance to a consistent methodology and business practice in e-waste operations. The business will operate as ByteBack!
To assist with the establishment of the alliance and the initial infrastructure costs, we have made application for funding to Sustainability Victoria and await the outcome of that process.

Social Impact program commencing in May!

|
|
VATMI Industries in Kew are preparing for the commencement of the Social Impact program in early May, a unique program run by Impact Support Services Inc., facilitated by Donna Gabriel. Impact Support Services work in partnership with people living with a disability to provide them with opportunities to participate in community life, to assist them in making informed choices and to have the best quality of life they can.
The Social Impact program involves a series of monthly two-hour workshops which teach adults with intellectual disability about relationships and dating. |
Of the tens of thousands of people with a disability living in Melbourne, many are lonely. By participating in the program, those who want a partner have the opportunity to learn the relevant skills in a fun, safe and non-judgmental environment.
The program aims to increase conversation and communication skills, to build assertiveness and emotional independence, to explore the dynamics of relationships, and to develop confidence through learning how to feel and look good. The workshops will also create a broader awareness of the risks and laws of unsafe sex and sexual abuse. The participants will have opportunities to practice their new skills at group social events such as speed dating, dinner, karaoke, games and dance classes, culminating in a graduation gala in December.

Trainee Program in Motion: The Doy Pouch |
|
| |
| |
In July of 2010 VATMI invested $500,000 in a Doy Pouch machine at Keon Park. Since inception, the new machine has been a source of interest amongst customers and staff members alike. We have had two staff members who have excelled in their skills and technique with the machine. Steve Bentley and Tulsa Chester (pictured) have both shown aptitude and diligence with this new technology and as such have become the resident experts.
They have been training for the past 6 months and have recently been wage assessed by CRS on machine operations and they have performed fantastically. They are both highly skilled in set up and clean down of the entire machine as well as being able to operate the auger, weigh heads, x-ray and check weigher.
Outside of their skills operating the Doy pouch machine, they also show strong leadership qualities to the other employees on the Doy pouch line. Their example is strengthening the team and boosting productivity.
Steve and Tulsa’s achievements are a great indication of the success of the trainee program and both of these employees are a credit to themselves. All at Keon Park are very proud of their efforts and Site Manager Adrian Train would like to say congratulations on behalf of VATMI Industries Ltd.

Public Service Seeks Workers with Disabilities |
|
| |
| |
|
|
VATMI is an industry leader in terms of the employment of people with disabilities. Since 1958, VATMI has endeavoured to further integrate the mainstream workforce with that of employees with disabilities. However this culture of inclusion is not a common trend amongst the average working community. The ACT Government is now moving to attract more people with disabilities into the public service.
|
Outlined in the ACT Public Service Employment Strategy, projections are to double the number of public servants with disabilities to approximately over 700 employees over a four year period. Chief Minister, Jon Stanhope says the Government is creating more dedicated jobs for employees with disabilities. Additional work will also be done to improve the current training schemes and further develop mentoring programs for people with disabilities.
VATMI have always believed in the power of real jobs for real people and continue to further develop training and mentoring programs within our business. This main focus of this initiative is "providing genuine … enabling people with disabilities to have as independent life as possible" - something which aligns closely with VATMI vision.
