As winter approaches and many trees are bare, the more sculptural plants really come into their own. This month I am focusing on three plants that are excellent choices when a bold look is needed.

Draceana draco – Dragon Tree or Dragon's Blood Tree

Here is a truly outstanding tree – though it’s not really a tree. If you plant one of these it will probably outlive the owners of the garden, and several hundred generations after that. Reputedly able to live for thousands of years – there are reports of one being over 6500 years old, a mature Dragon Tree is an amazing sight. Initially they are single-trunked, but after flowering (usually at around 15 years old the first time) two new branches form from the base of the flower spike. When these flower, two more branches develop, until eventually a umbrella-shaped canopy forms. And where does the name come from? The tree has a red sap, reminiscent of dragons blood (apparently). More practically, it is used to stain wood. Cultivation is easy, as long a there is good drainage and plenty of sun. We have Dragon Trees in 95lt and larger sizes.

Acmena smithii 'Firescreen'   Acmena smithii 'Green Form'

Acmena smithii 'Firescreen'   Beschorneria yuccoides – Mexican Lily

It does come from Mexico, but it is not a lily. However, it does have a spectacular flower. Born on large pink stems, the flowers are pink and green coloured bells. They are long lasting. But even without the flowers, the Mexican Lily is a worthy plant. Although the leaves are held upright and stiff, they are not spiky, unlike many similar plants. This means they can be planted in gardens with children or pets without worry. They form clumps, expanding each year. As far as maintenance goes, all that is needed is the occasional removal of old leaves. They thrive in well-drained soil, in a sunny position, with very low water requirements. We have Mexican Lilies in 30cm pots

Acmena smithii 'Firescreen'   Agave attenuata

The colouring of the leaves of this versatile agave is stunning. The blue-green hues can be mixed with many different plants, to create tonal harmonies or contrasts. The rosette form of the leaves can form a nice contrast with more strappy leaved plants such as the Mexican Lily. One advantage that Agave attenuata has over other similar plants is that it will tolerate partial shade, or positions that don't receive full all-day sun. This means that it can be used in position where other succulents wouldn't thrive. It is also good for use in pots in hot, dry positions like balconies. We stock Agave attenuata in a range of pot sizes from 25cm to 58cm.
