The daffodils are in full bloom at Kilby, and Spring is just round the corner, so I thought we would have a look at 3 plants that flower now, heralding the warmer weather (hopefully!). Please note that due to changes by our bank we are no longer able to accept American Express or Diners Club cards.

Pieris japonica – Lily-of-the-Valley Bush
An old-fashioned favourite, the Lily-of-the-Valley bush is likely to have resurgence in popularity. Even small plants can smother themselves in flowers, and even before the flowers emerge, the long panicles of buds are attractive. Evergreen, it tends to flower more profusely in the sun, whilst growing denser and lusher in light shade. It is also outstanding in pots. We have both the species, and the cultivar ‘Mountain Fire’, with distinctly reddish new growth. It can be expected to grow to 2.5-3m tall, and needs little pruning, as in maintains an attractive shape.

Arbutus canariensis – Canary Island Strawberry Tree, or Madrone
Looking a bit like a tree version of the Pieris (they are distantly related), the Canary Island Strawberry Tree has everything going for it. Evergreen, with dark leaves, bronze new growth, Lily-of-the-Valley-like flowers, and red strawberry-like fruit in Autumn. And, if that wasn’t enough, the bark is a beautiful bronze/red colour, peeling as it matures. Coming from the Canary Islands, it is able to withstand hot weather, has a low water requirement once established, and is fully hardy in Melbourne winters. It forms a neat, round-headed tree up to 6m in maturity.

Viburnum tinus - Laurustinus
One of the most shade tolerant of hedging shrubs, Viburnum tinus looks good at any time of the year. Evergreen, the leaves are nice and dark. In winter the pink buds open to fragrant white flowers. These are followed by dark blue/black berries. It can cope with coastal conditions, and is excellent to use where a hedge is required under trees or in shade. It responds well to clipping, and can be kept neat and dense. Frost tolerant, if left unpruned it will grow to about 3m.
