Farewell and thank you to CAMS Stalwart – Graham Hoinville
“It is not often in one’s career as a CEO that you have the opportunity to pay tribute to a gentleman that lives and breathes the sport and the organisation, and particularly a gentleman who is about to celebrate his 81st birthday and retire from paid employment.” – Graham Fountain.
After 21 years, CAMS will bid goodbye to one of its longest serving and highly respected staff members, Graham Hoinville.
Graham has been involved in motor sport since 1949 when he purchased an AAA licence for “5 bob across the counter” and has been involved with the administration of motor sport since CAMS’ inception in 1953. His contributions to CAMS have been invaluable, especially as a technical adviser.
In 1954 Graham became the first Chairman of the CAMS Technical Committee and remarkably still holds this position to this day. He has previously held roles including Senior Steward and membership of the Australian Historic Motor Sport Commission.
Until the end of 2007, Graham was the CAMS representative to the FIA Historic Motor Sport Commission, the world body which oversees Historic racing at an international level. He was a highly respected and popular member of this key Committee for eight years.
As a club member, Graham has served as a committee member and Club President, CAMS administrator, State Councillor, Deputy Delegate to the National Council and member and Chairman of the National Technical Committee. Since 1970 he has represented motor sport on the Commonwealth Government’s Vehicles Advisory Committee.

Graham’s contribution to motor sport, both on and off the track, has been significant with involvement as both a volunteer and competitor. This contribution has been honoured with several awards including the CAMS Award of Merit and CAMS Service Award. He was awarded Clubman of the Year by the Elfin Owners & Drivers Club for his outstanding achievement in winning the 1991 Grand Prix Rally, and is a life member of the Victorian Historic Racing Register.

In 2008, Graham was recognised by the Federation Internationale de’l Automobile (FIA) for his dedicated service to the international body – a rarely presented and highly prized award.
Graham has competed in racing, sprints, motorkhanas and trials, both driving and navigating. He has competed in Africa, Europe and Asia as a representative of Australia. He was Australian Rally Champion in 1968 and to this day, is still actively involved in the organising of rallies and construction of sports cars.
“Graham is a man whose dedication, commitment, support, outstanding technical knowledge and ability to recall the finest details in the blink of an eye will be sadly missed by everyone at CAMS,” said CAMS CEO Graham Fountain.
“I know I speak for every staff member and the broader CAMS membership when I say a big THANK YOU to Graham and wish him luck in his retirement from paid work. We look forward to his ongoing involvement and commitment in his voluntary activities with the organisation.
“We could not ask for a finer gentlemen than Graham Hoinville and we wish him the very best in retirement. We also acknowledge Dorothea for her tireless support of Graham pursuing his passion in life.”
Graham’s dedication and service to the motor sport community, as well as his gentle nature and integrity, have long been a part of CAMS as an organisation. Graham’s infinite knowledge, wisdom and kind humour will be missed but certainly not forgotten.
